How much space does a staircase take?

A staircase requires a lot of room, upstairs and downstairs. To plan a standard staircase, you will typically need an 8-foot ceiling with 9 feet floor space. Building a staircase does require careful planning of the area and you must know all your spacing. However, our experts can help you with any measurement you need.

What is the minimum width of a staircase?

There are no restrictions when it comes to the width of a staircase. A main staircase usually has a width of 800mm to 900mm, but for a secondary staircase the width must be at least 600mm.

Do stairs have to have banisters?

All staircases should have at least one handrail if it’s less than a meter wide, but if the staircase is more than a meter wide it must have 2 handrails.

Can you paint wooden stairs?

Yes, but you must make sure that you use paint that is specifically used for wood. If you use normal paint, you could end up with an unfinished look and the paint will wear off easily.

Can you change the direction of stairs?

Staircases can be moved and changed around, but changing the direction of a staircase does require a lot of time, effort and planning. Before you do anything, you must come up with a plan that considers the spacing and style.
